Day 2 - Baku

Gobustan - 40 miles south of Baku, along the coast of the Caspian Sea, is an archeological site discovered by accident in the 1930's of rock carvings and petroglyphs going back as far as 20,000 years ago.

Driving down the coast:

Two "mud" volcanoes. The first one is not active, the second one last erupted in September 2019.

Azerbaijan is an oil rich country. I though this sign was quite ironic...


Bibi-Heybat Mosque - This 13th C mosque was destroyed in 1934 by Stalin and rebuilt in 1998.

Martyrs Lane - This memorial is set in a beautiful park and pays homage to the 137 people
killed during Black January 1990, when the Soviets sent tanks into the city and fired on Azerbaijani civilians. The attack marked the turning point in the country’s drive toward independence.
